Medical Assisting, AAS

The Medical Assisting curriculum prepares multi-skilled health care professionals qualified to perform administrative, clinical, and laboratory procedures.

Course work includes instruction in scheduling appointments, coding and processing insurance accounts, billing, collections, medical transcription, computer operations; assisting with examinations/treatments, performing routine laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, supervised medication administration; and ethical/legal issues associated with patient care.

Graduates of CAAHEP accredited medical assisting programs may be eligible to sit for the American Association of Medical Assistants’ Certification Examination to become Certified Medical Assistants. Employment opportunities include physicians’ offices, health maintenance organizations, health departments, and hospitals.

General Education: 15 Hours


Social/Behavioral Sciences: 3 Hours


Humanities/Fine Arts Elective: 3 Hours


Selected from the list of Humanities/Fine Arts  electives for the Associate in Applied Science degree appearing in the current catalog.

Natural Sciences/Math: 3 Hours


Students are required to demonstrate competency in the equivalent of MAT 070 or DMA 010 DMA 050  prior to enrollment in this curriculum.

Major Hours: 60 Hours


Other Required Hours: 1 Hour


Total Medical Assisting, AAS: 76 Credits


All health science students must make grades of “A,” “B,” “C,” or “SA” on all applicable course work to progress each semester and graduate from the program.

The Medical Assisting Program is approved by the North Carolina Community College System and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP at 25400 US Hwy 19 North, Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33763; Telephone Number 727-210-2350; www.caahep.org) in conjunction with the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).
