The Polysomnography curriculum prepares individuals, working in conjunction with a physician, to perform and interpret sleep studies and to provide comprehensive clinical evaluations that are required for the diagnosis of sleep related disorders. Students should acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to perform sleep studies, including recording and interpreting events observed during sleep. Treatment of sleep related disorders and patient education focused on healthy sleep habits will also be discussed. Graduates of accredited programs may be eligible to apply to take the examination offered by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. Employment opportunities may be found in hospitals and freestanding sleep centers.

This is a competitive admissions program, and acceptance is not guaranteed. Applicants are accepted for admission based on required criterion and individual applications. To be eligible to apply for the AAS, Associate Degree Polysomnography program, students must meet the following minimum prerequisite requirements.

Minimum MATH Prerequisite Requirements:

An applicant must have completed ONE of the following before receiving the applicant packet:

  • An unweighted high school GPA of 2.8 or higher from a College Prep Curriculum
  • A grade of “P” for DMA 010-080
  • A grade of “C” or higher for MAT 080
  • Completion of Transitions Math through Tier 3
  • A grade of “C” or higher in MAT 035
  • Placement test scores that demonstrate mastery of MAT 035

Students who have completed a college approved Math course such as MAT-121, MAT-122, MAT141, MAT-143, MAT-151, MAT-152, MAT-161, MAT-171, MAT-263, or MAT-271 (with grade of C or better) may meet the math requirement.

All Health Sciences and Nursing students must make grades of “A,” “B,” “C,” or “SA” on all applicable course work to progress each semester and graduate from the program. The Polysomnography Associate Degree Program is approved by the North Carolina Community College System and is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP at 9355 – 113th Street, North, #7709, Seminole, FL 33775; Telephone Number 727-210-2350; www.caahep.org) in conjunction with the Committee on Accreditation for Polysomnographic Technologist Education (CoA PSG).

*RPSGT Transition students are given credit for these PSG courses. A copy of their current unrestricted license/credential to practice must be on file in Registrar’s Office. All other PSG courses may be taken as credit by exam. Credit by exam will follow the college’s process for each applicable course.
